Energy Management: Efficiency, Sustainability and Legal Framework for Businesses

Introduction

Today, energy is not only a resource that ensures the continuity of production, but also a strategic element that determines the competitiveness of enterprises. Increasing energy costs, the fight against climate change and international environmental regulations force businesses to take more conscious and systematic steps in energy management.

Energy management is a holistic process covering the planned and efficient use of energy resources, reduction of losses and transition to renewable energy.

-------------------

Importance of Energy Management

Enerji yönetimi, işletmelerin sürdürülebilirlik hedeflerine ulaşmasında kilit bir role sahiptir. Enerji yoğun sektörlerde yapılan verimlilik çalışmalarıyla %15–30 oranında tasarruf sağlanabilir. Bu tasarruf yalnızca maliyetleri düşürmekle kalmaz, aynı zamanda karbon ayak izini azaltarak çevresel fayda sağlar.

Energy management provides competitive advantage by increasing investor and customer confidence. The ‘Energy Efficiency Law’ in Turkey and the obligation of large-scale enterprises to conduct regular energy audits within the scope of EU harmonisation processes show that legal harmonisation in this field is also critical.

-------------------

Systems Used in Energy Management

ISO 50001 Energy Management System covers the processes of establishing energy policy, determining energy performance indicators (EnPI) and establishing energy monitoring infrastructure. This system is based on the continuous improvement cycle (Plan-Act-Check-Act).

Energy audits and audits determine energy losses in facilities and identify applications such as insulation, motor efficiency, lighting transformation. Renewable energy integration enables the inclusion of resources such as solar, biomass and wind in enterprises. In Turkey, surplus energy can be sold to the grid with YEKDEM support.

-------------------

Legal Framework and Incentives

Türkiye’de 2007 yılında yürürlüğe giren Enerji Verimliliği Kanunu, büyük işletmelere enerji yöneticisi atama ve enerji etüdü yaptırma zorunluluğu getirmiştir. Sanayi ve Teknoloji Bakanlığı’nın Verimlilik Artırıcı Projeler (VAP) desteği, işletmelere enerji verimliliği projelerinde %30’a varan hibe sağlamaktadır.

While KOSGEB's Green Industry Programme provides support for SMEs' energy efficiency investments, the EU's Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and ISO 50001 harmonisation processes directly affect exporting companies in Turkey.

-------------------

Opportunities for Businesses

Energy management offers multifaceted opportunities to businesses. These include reduction in energy costs, reduction of carbon emissions, increased investor confidence and gaining prestige with international certification (ISO 50001).

In addition, reducing investment costs by utilising public support increases the long-term competitiveness of enterprises.

-------------------

Conclusion

Energy management is an indispensable process not only for legal compliance but also for the long-term competitiveness of businesses. Energy efficiency investments pay for themselves in a short time, increase sustainability performance and offer new business opportunities to businesses.
