We have made greenhouse gas (carbon footprint) calculations. What about the aftermath...

Recently, there is a sentence that is frequently heard especially in industrial circles: “We calculated our carbon footprint.” Well, what happened then? Reports were prepared, tables were filled, emissions were written in tonnes. However, the real question still remains: What do we do after calculating?

Today, many businesses, municipalities and institutions see carbon footprint measurement as an obligation. This process, which is considered as a work to be done and a document to be delivered, is often completed with the understanding of “keep it in the file”. However, the reality is different; the issue is not to measure, but to improve.

Calculating greenhouse gases is like taking a photograph. It shows the current situation, but if you look at the photo and do not take action, it will only remain in the archive. The improvement process starts at this point and proceeds with three basic questions: Where are the most emissions produced? What can be done technically and economically to reduce this? What is the environmental as well as financial return of the steps to be taken? No organisation that does not answer these questions can claim to have initiated a true green transformation.

Carbon footprint optimisation is not just a matter for environmentalists; it is also a matter of cost, competition and sustainability. Energy efficient businesses pay lower bills, have a more predictable cost structure and gain a stronger position in the supply chain. Organisations that manage their waste, reclaim their water and generate their energy survive not because of good intentions, but because they are smart.

For a long time, the approach of “If we cannot reduce, we compensate” was adopted. However, this approach is no longer sufficient. The global market is now asking the question “What have you actually reduced and by how much?”. Therefore, the critical point in green transformation is implementation and improvement. Today, this process requires concrete steps such as the transformation of energy sources, redesign of production-distribution-consumption processes, digital monitoring systems and behavioural changes. Practices in the field are valued more than commitments on paper.

The obligations introduced under the “Climate Law” in Turkey were enacted on 2 July 2025. The purpose of the law is to combat climate change in line with the green growth vision and net zero emission target. Energy-intensive sectors were given time until 31 December 2025 to calculate greenhouse gas calculations, and it was stated that legal obligations would begin as of 1 January 2026. The real risk here is not to produce high carbon, but to appear to be doing nothing. Because investors, banks, suppliers and consumers are now questioning whether institutions will survive in the next 5-10 years.

“It is no longer enough to say ”we have calculated". What matters is where to start, which step to take first and who will manage the transformation. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is possible not with abstract targets, but with practices that have an equivalent in the field. Improvement processes that are recognised today are shaped around four basic elements:

Energy management: Energy consumption still accounts for the largest share of emissions. Investments in renewable energy - especially solar and wind - have become a strategic choice. Energy efficiency, the right choice of equipment and automation systems are among the steps that provide quick returns.

Water management: The supply, treatment and discharge of water creates significant energy consumption. Rainwater storage, grey water reuse and closed loop systems reduce both emissions and costs.

Waste management: Waste is no longer a burden to be disposed of, but a resource when managed properly. Separation at source and integration into recycling processes play a critical role in reducing carbon footprint.

Heating and transport: Fossil fuel-based systems are persistent sources of emissions. Electric and low-emission transport solutions, alternative fuels, heat pumps and smart heating systems are key to reducing this dependence.

Improvements are incomplete if these four elements are not addressed together. The carbon footprint does not consist of a single item, but of interconnected systems. The process of improvement requires courage, planning and persistence, but most importantly will. The carbon footprint is no longer just an environmental issue - it is a defining issue for business, society and the future. Those who succeed will be those who manage these systems with a holistic view.
